Taina Suonio is a garden designer, horticulturist, environmental biologist, and researcher in the Fifth Dimension – Green Roofs in Urban Areas research group of the University of Helsinki, which concentrates on environmental change and policy on urban green roofs. She is also a frequent lecturer at various educational institutions in her native Finland and abroad, and contributor to media in urban greening and gardening matters.
Taina obtained her first professional qualification in the field, the British Higher National Diploma in Horticulture in Northern Ireland. She is the co-initiator of the Greenest of the Green award-winning block of flats project in Helsinki. In London she worked with Professor Nigel Dunnett to create the “dreamy and magical” Barbican Centre roof garden.
After fourteen years of contributing to other designers at the world-renowned Chelsea Flower Show, for the 2019 show Taina will present her own design, a Finnish first, The Roots in Finland Kyrö Garden.
Her positions of trust include the Deputy Chair of the National Association of Green Environment, the Chair of The Garden Builders’ Association and the Chair of The Finnish Horticulturists’ Association. She is a Member of the Executive Board of the Scandinavian Green Roof Association since 2015.
